The camisole, or "cami," has the distinction of being one of the only pieces of women's lingerie to have escaped the bedroom and made a place for itself in the everyday wardrobe. In addition to being a fun piece of lingerie, a lace camisole is now considered acceptable as a piece of outerwear to be worn on its own or in combination with other tops.

Lingerie Camisoles

Camisoles have long had a place among the many types of lingerie for the bedroom. They are generally in the shape of a tank top, fitting close to the body with spaghetti straps over the shoulders. Unlike corsets or bustiers, the camisole isn't structured. As a result, don't expect the cami to provide shaping. As with other lingerie tops, a women's camisole looks great paired with a matching garter belt and panties.

The lingerie cami can be sheer and transparent, taking its sex appeal up a few notches. Many silk camisoles also feature beautiful lace and ribbon details to really make the look perfect. For the wild woman, animal print and leather camisoles can let her personality and sex appeal shine through. Larger girls will find that plus-size camisoles help them feel sexy.

The Camisole as Clothing

The camisole has evolved from bedroom-only wear to something that can be worn by itself or in combination with other pieces of clothing. These camis can be found in practically any color, in clothing as well as lingerie stores. Some stores even sell maternity camisoles that allow women to fill in any gaps between the top of the pants and the shirt.

Many women find themselves wearing camisoles underneath sheer clothing, or underneath tops with a deep neckline for modesty reasons. Wearing a camisole with a lacy neckline underneath another piece of clothing also gives a stylish layered look to any outfit, and provides a bit more warmth under a thin garment.

Women can choose matching or contrasting colors to add interest to their wardrobe. For example, a vivid turquoise or fuchsia camisole can be the perfect complement to a dark-colored blazer, jacket or sweater.
