A corset gives a classic figure
The corset could be considered the great-grandmother of today’s shape wear. It was originally laced up tightly to give the body a cylindrical shape and flatten the chest so that the breasts seemed to spill out the top. This original corset included boning made of whale bones or steel to help the corset hold its specific hourglass shape. Today’s corsets are rarely as tight-fitting as the ones from the 19th and 20th centuries, though they still include some boning to provide structure and emphasize women’s curves.
Types of Corsets
Strapless corsets are considered the classic corset style. Increasingly, they are being worn on their own as a shirt or on top of clothing. Whether underneath or on top of a shirt (or alone!) they function to provide structure and shape to the torso. On the other hand, bustier corsets typically have straps. As a result, they resemble a camisole. The difference between a bustier and a camisole lies in the amount of structure: a bustier maintains the boning typical of a corset to smooth the body and emphasize a tinier waist and curvy hips.
Most corsets have a fastening mechanism at the front, and laces at the back. The lacings allow the corset to be fitted as tightly as desired to the body. Push up bra corsets are popular, as they give the illusion of a fuller figure while slimming the waist at the same time.

The corset, with its rigid and controlled yet feminine look, has become a lingerie staple. Available in many different fabrics such as silk, satin and velvet, most women will be able to find the perfect corset for the bedroom. To really go the extra mile, consider choosing a leather corset, or a corset that includes garter straps and matching panties.
