Clothing similar to what we call underwear has been around in some form for thousands of years. Most historians agree that the loincloth was the first type of underwear worn by humans. Since then, undergarments have undergone considerable changes related to fit, function and fashion. Today’s underwear is offered in a range of cuts, colors and sizes to suit almost any need.
Womens Underwear
Women’s underwear encompasses a range of intimate apparel. Panties are perhaps the best known and most commonly worn type of underwear, and the types available are limited only by the imagination. Panties come in a range of styles that are generally distinguished by the amount of fabric they use. G-strings and thongs use the smallest amount of material, and are often chosen to minimize panty lines when wearing tight pants or skirts. Bikini briefs, hipsters and high-cut briefs offer more coverage. Panties also come in boy short and boxer styles, which are similar in look and comfort level to men’s boxer briefs.
Underwear for women also includes other garments, including slips and camisoles. These undergarments are usually worn underneath dresses and skirts and serve various functions. A slip may provide a woman with a softer layer next to the skin to reduce scratching from materials like wool or provide additional warmth. A slip can also be worn under a dress or skirt that would be see-through if worn alone.
Aside from style, underwear can be further personalized through fabric choice. Cotton underwear is popular for its breathability, while silk underwear is prized for its softness. Other materials include Lycra, nylon, polyester and satin. What constitutes sexy underwear is up to the wearer, but usually silk or satin underwear with lace trim is considered the most exotic.
Mens Underwear
Most people will agree that there are far fewer choices in men’s underwear than in women’s. However, the number of options for undergarments available to men is definitely growing. Men typically pledge allegiance to boxers, boxer briefs or briefs, but can also choose G-strings, thongs or tangas to suit their style and function needs. Long underwear is another option for men looking to increase the warmth of their wardrobe. Typical fabrics include cotton, silk, polyester and Lycra.
